BMW가 2012년 1월에 "BMW M Performance Automobile"이라는 명칭의 새로운 모델 라인을 만들었다는 걸 아시는 분도 계시고 모르시는 분도 계시겠지요. 이게 기존의 BMW M과 차별화를 두고 있는데요 이름부터 기존의 M은 "BMW M Automobile"였는데 새로운 M은 "BMW M Performance Automobile"로 단순히 보면 Performance 라는 단어가 추가되었습니다. 그래서 2012년 8월 현재 BMW M은 오리지널의 M과 신규로 만들어진 M Performance 이렇게 두 라인업을 구성하고 있습니다. 과연 어떤 차이일까요?  자, BMW M GmbH 에서 릴리즈한 기사를 통해 차별화를 확인해 보도록 하겠습니다. 

실용성

위의 글처럼 일단 기존의 M Automobile과 차별화를 두는 가치의 핵심은 실용성입니다. 분명 BMW는 "BMW M Performance Automobile" 라인업을  기존의 M이 아닌 전혀 새로운 라인업으로 만들어가려고 하고 있고 그 핵심에는 퍼포먼스 차량이지만 데일리카로도 쓸 수 있을 정도로 기존의 M 모델보다 훨씬 실용적이다는 것이 내재되어 있습니다. BMW M의 사장님은 이런 말도 했습니다. 

 “We are targeting our efforts at customers looking for more emotionality and more performance, but who don’t want to forgo the everyday usability of their cars,“ 그리고 이런 이야기도 했군요. "a range including a wide variety of model series, as well as both petrol and diesel-engined variants”

즉, 퍼포먼스카는 사고 싶은데 실생활에서 활용성이 떨어져서 망설였던 소비자들을 가져오겠다는 건데요 이를 위해 모델 종류도 다양화하고 기존에 M이 가솔린 엔진 모델만 나와서 연비가 극악이었기 때문에 디젤 엔진이 달린 M도 만들어서 이 부분을 보완하겠다는 내용입니다. 그리고  BMW xDrive가 기본으로 들어가게 되는데요 이는 Audi의 콰토르와 같이 모든바퀴굴림 방식을 기본으로 채용하겠다는 것입니다. BMW에서는 실용성과 퍼포먼스 두마리의 토끼를 잡는데 xDrive와 디젤 엔진이 중요하다고 보고 있는 듯 합니다. 

BMW M Performance Automobile 모델 구성

실용성을 앞세운 M performance 모델은 다음과 같이 구성됩니다. 

1) BMW M Performance 모델은 BMW M550d xDrive Sedan,BMW M550d xDrive Touring, BMW X5 M50d and BMW X6 M50d 로 런칭됩니다. 즉 4모델로 시작하여 추가하는 방식으로 라인업을 구성합니다. 

2) 4모델 모두 위에서 설명한 M Performance TwinPower Turbo 기술이 접목된 동일한 6기통 3L 디젤 엔진을 사용하게 됩니다. 이 새롭게 추가되는 엔진인 N57S에 관해서는 "BMW N57D30 Engine"를 참고하세요.

3) 4모델 모두 BMW M Performance 8단 자동변속기를 사용하며 모든바퀴굴림 방식인 xDrive 가 기본 장착됩니다. 

4) 이외 서스펜션, 스프링, 댐퍼, 샷시, 스티어링 등 모두 동일한 M 패키지를 사용합니다.

이로써 BMW M Performance 라인업의 4개의 모델이 완성되었습니다. 각 모델의 간단한 성능은 아래와 같습니다. 

BMW M550d xDrive Sedan: 

제로백 [0 – 100 km/h (62 mph)]: 4.7 seconds, 

최대속도: 250 km/h (155 mph), 

연비: 6.3 litres/100 kilometres

CO2 배출: 165 g/km, exhaust standard: EU6.

BMW M550d xDrive Touring: 

제로백 [0 – 100 km/h (62 mph)]: 4.9 seconds, 

최대속도: 250 km/h (155 mph), 

연비: 6.4 litres/100 kilometres

CO2  배출 : 169 g/km, exhaust standard: EU6.

BMW X5 M50d: 

제로백 [0 – 100 km/h (62 mph)]: 5.4 seconds, 

최대속도: 250 km/h (155 mph), 

연비: 7.5 litres/100 kilometres

CO2  배출 : 199 g/km, exhaust standard: EU5.

BMW M 퍼포먼스 라인업에 대해 정리해 보았습니다. BMW가 이렇게 나온다면 Mercedes-Benz 도 가만히 있지 않겠죠. 보다 실용적인 AMG 모델들이 조만간 출시될 지 모르겠습니다.
